The average British adult wastes nearly £10 worth of still edible food every week, totting up to a costly £40 a month - or £470 a year per household. Incredibly, 7.3m tonnes of household food waste was thrown away in 2015 alone - the latest year we have figures for - and 4.4m tonnes of this was deemed to be avoidable waste. Currently only half of leftover food cooked in British homes currently gets eaten. I then enlisted the help of waste experts Veolia and Sainsbury's, who rifled through my bin to calculate just how much my food waste costs me. I've also shared an amazing food waste recipe that will help you to use up every grocery.
