London, Ont., could be scene of next stalemate over police carding

In an emotional address to London city council last week, Salih detailed the damaging effect of carding, also known as street checks, on racialized residents. Throughout his adult life, Mohamed Salih estimates he’s been stopped 15 times by police across southern Ontario, including in Toronto, Peel, Kitchener-Waterloo and his hometown, London. But London council’s move illustrates how, across the province, there remain lingering concerns that Ontario’s carding regulations won’t go far enough to eliminate random and discriminatory stops. Another major criticism of the provincial regulations is that exemptions could allow discriminatory stops to continue. The possibility of yet another bitter carding stalemate between police and a civilian board — known all too well in Toronto and Peel region — is another concern surrounding the carding regulations.
