The award, among the WHO's most prestigious honours, will be presented during the 79th World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, in May. WHO Executive Board's vice chairman Pongsadhorn Pokpermdee said WHO headquarters in Geneva confirmed the selection committee unanimously nominated Dr Worawit, with final approval granted by the WHO Executive Board. "The board praised Dr Worawit for consistently upholding humanitarian principles in public health throughout his decades of service in Umphang district, one of Thailand's most remote and geographically challenging areas," Dr Pongsadhorn said. In addition, Dr Worawit has introduced innovative management solutions suited to resource-limited settings, including the use of solar energy to reduce hospital costs, medicine donation schemes and the training of cross-border community health volunteers. Dr Worawit has served at Umphang Hospital since 1991 and is a recipient of the Public Health Ministry's Outstanding Rural Doctor Award.
