Stuff reporter Rob Stock heads out to Glen Innes to meet Andrew and Julie Tasipale who want lower-income renters to hear the story of how they became homeowners. Andrew and Julie Tasipale were kind enough to host me in their new Auckland home last week. To recognise this is a family asset, not personal wealth, the house has been put into a trust to preserve it. While Pākehā money culture is centred on personal responsibility, we often underestimate the obligations honoured within Pākehā families, and the inter-family flows of money and support within them. The Tasipales speak of changing their family culture, so that each coming generation is brought up learning about how successful money lives work.
