Football finance expert Kieran Maguire, a lecturer at the University of Liverpool and author of The Price of FootbalI, told the ECHO: "I always focus on the EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) profits that exclude the one-off transactions, exclude player sales. "You've got Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City who are within spitting distance of each other, all at around £1.3bn - that's the gross spend. "In terms of a return on investment, Liverpool's return is fantastic. A Champions League, a Premier League, they've been in another Champions League final. That is indicative of an organisation which is geared towards spending smarter rather than spending full stop.
