Palmerston North toddler Ivar Watene-Bloor has dodged the open-heart surgery and zipped-up chest scar worn by many other heart kids. Watene said every step of the way, Heart Kids volunteers were there to support her and the family. Coming into winter, she had not had time to organise firewood, so a team of Heart Kids' members managed a working bee and delivery. Heart Kids came to the fore again, providing advice on the risks and practical ways to manage them, including a code for priority delivery of groceries from Countdown. Heart Kids gets no money from the Government and depends on donations.
