KOTA KINABALU: The Marine Department will work with state authorities in drawing up measures to prevent a recurrence of the catamaran tragedy, Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said Tuesday. “We need a thorough investigation,” he said after visiting 11 of the 20 rescued Chinese tourists from the ill-fated catamaran who remained at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital here. Liow said the incident exposed “many” problems in the marine tourism industry here, prompting calls for greater safety measures. If the permissible number is 12 passengers, then that should be the number the boat should be carrying,” Liow said. Twenty of the Chinese nationals survived their 32-hour ordeal at sea, while four died.
