“Only mad dogs and Helmut Newton go out in the midday sun,” David Bailey once said of his friend’s use of harsh light. Newton, one of the world’s most influential photographers, preferred to shoot on location, which often included working in the baking heat. To mark what would have been his 100th birthday — he died in 2004 at the age of 83 after a car crash outside a celebrity hotel in Los Angeles — some of his iconic shots are being brought together for the first time.
