'Life-saving' hunter training and education gets $700,000 boost

A “life-saving” course designed to improve hunters’ skills out in the wild has received a $700,000 boost from the Government. The funding, which comes out of the Jobs for Nature Fund, will go towards the creation of five hunter education and training positions in conjunction with the implementation of the National Hunter Education and Training Scheme (NHETS) over a three year period. Justin McCabe, of Wellington, a graduate the Hunts course, said it saved his life when he went out hunting in the Wairarapa in 2016. “If it weren’t for the course, and what I taught me, I could have died in that river that day.'' “We’re really pleased the Department of Conservation is seeing the value that hunting brings through this funding.
