Heritage category for Sir Joseph Ward statue in Bluff

The Sir Joseph Ward statue in Bluff now has heritage recognition. A statute in Bluff of former Prime Minister Sir Joseph Ward has received a category 2 heritage place listing. Sir Joseph moved with his family to Bluff from Melbourne in 1983 and went on to be elected to the Bluff Borough Council in 1878 and become the mayor of Bluff in 1881 at the age of 25. He was New Zealand’s 17th Prime Minister between 1906 and 1912, and again from 1928 to 1930, before resigning due to ill health. Bluff Community Board chairman Raymond Fife said the heritage category was an excellent recognition of a politician raised in Bluff and recognition for Bluff itself.
