Is it possible to call a film the funniest ever made? Of course, all artistic judgments have an element of subjectivity, but how widely a film inspires laughter seems especially subjective. Fortunately, we have something of a metric. In 2000, the American Film Institute, having solicited the views of assorted scholars, critics and industry insiders for its “100 Years...100 Laughs” poll, deemed Billy Wilder’s 1959 film “Some Like It Hot” the funniest comedy to have been produced in the U.S. up to that point.
