OTTAWA–The Liberal government is reversing course on its pick for the next head of Elections Canada with just over a year to go before the 2019 general election. The Star reported in April that Michael Boda, the current head of Elections Saskatchewan, was the government’s pick to succeed Marc Mayrand as chief electoral officer. But NDP democratic institutions critic Nathan Cullen said Monday the Liberals have informed opposition parties that a different candidate is now being recommended. According to the NDP, Trudeau wrote to them on April 3 to inform them Boda would be the government’s selection for the chief electoral officer. In a statement, a spokesperson for acting Democratic Institutions Minister Scott Brison said simply they look forward to welcoming the next chief electoral officer.
