The previous Conservative government announced in 2012 it would sell off some 50 diplomatic properties, including a historic Roman villa, multiple mansions across the United States and an $85-million Hong Kong property. The Conservatives aimed to raise tens of millions from the sales and save $3.5 million in annual operating expenses by “rightsizing” Canada’s diplomatic presence. But documents obtained by the Star under access to information legislation show Global Affairs Minister Stéphane Dion was asked to “adjust” the plans shortly after taking over the department.
