Nightlife in Toronto is having a hard go of it of late as dance and performance venues get squeezed out. Remember the old disco song, “Last Night a DJ Saved My Life”? The job is modelled after Amsterdam’s Nachtburgemeester, night mayor, a role established in 2014 that has since been copied in other cities such as Paris and Zurich. The night mayor brokers disputes between residents and nightclubs, as well as other nocturnal activates. In April, Toronto city council’s economic development committee voted to explore the creation of (a Night Mayor Ambassador Program, noting that the nighttime economy in the United Kingdom generates $100 billion a year.)
