It was another championship season for part of the Maple Leafs family. After the Marlies won the AHL’s Calder Cup in 2018, the Newfoundland Growlers in their first year of operation in the ECHL, captured the Kelly Cup on Tuesday night at home in St. John’s. A three-point night from forward Giorgio Estephan paced a 4-3 win over the Toledo Walleye to give the Growlers the title in six games of the best-of-seven final. A few of the Growlers are from Newfoundland, others on the team saw time with the Marlies this year or are late-round Leaf picks. It’s an ideal setup for Leafs training camp, which will open in St. John’s in mid-September.
