Holidaymakers are getting out of Wellington for the long Labour Weekend, and traffic is already building on State Highway 1 near Peka Peka, on the Kāpiti Coast. Queues out of the cities have eased after earlier congestion hampered drivers heading away for the long Labour Day weekend. Traffic congestion around Taupō was building from at least 4pm Friday as weekend arrivals mixed with those finishing work and heading home prior to the long weekend. On Thursday, Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield reminded Kiwis to be vigilant and to continue practising Covid-safe measures over the long weekend.
