Labour MP slammed for 'tone deaf' pay-cut post

Photo: NZ HeraldLabour MP Greg O'Connor has been criticised for a Facebook post where he complained about his 10 per cent pay cut as an MP, after his car broke down. It was a bad week to get a 10 per cent MP pay cut as those hospital stays aren't cheap. For his work as an MP, O'Connor receives a base rate of $163,961 a year, which is about three times the median annual income in New Zealand. Other MPs took a 10 per cent pay cut, which started at the beginning of July. The pay cut – 10 per cent for MPs and 20 per cent for ministers – officially took effect on July 9.
