Kiwi scientists have won a major prize for highlighting the supercharged melting of Antarctic ice and sea level rise we might expect if global warming exceeds 1.5 degrees Celsius. The team, led by Victoria University earth scientist Dr Tim Naish, found the Antarctic ice sheet was far more sensitive than anyone realised, after studying it for 15 years. Mario Tama/Getty-Images If global warming exceeds 1.5C, the Antarctic ice sheet could reach a tipping point, prize-winning modelling has found. "There might be a tipping point in the ice sheet between 1.5 and 2C. Projected sea level rise must be balanced against what's happening at the local coastline, which can be complicated, Levy said.
