A rising Kiwi medicine company expects Medsafe's plan to make all codeine and codeine-containing medicines prescription-only will boost sales of its off-the-shelf painkillers. AFT Pharmaceuticals, which is listed on the NZX sharemarket, said codeine medicines would become prescription-only from November 5 in a move designed to reduce codeine overdoses and poisoning. AFT Pharmaceuticals Managing Director Dr Hartley Atkinson said the move was likely to boost sales of its Maxigesic medicine. “We are pleased Medsafe has set a firm date for the rescheduling of codeine,” Atkinson said.
