Yet, the enduring image of Keri Hulme is one of a recluse, perhaps even a hermit, detached from the world. It's a detour off the main route which many tourists take for one reason: to see where Keri Hulme lives. Keri Hulme at home in Okarito on the South Island West Coast in 1987, two years after she won the Booker Prize. Fellow-author Joy Cowley commented: "Keri Hulme sat in our skulls while she wrote this work ... she has given us, us."
