Kenyan artist transforms volcanic rocks into indigenous works of art

In Ayienga’s case, what she has done through hours, days and months of trial-and-error experimentation using Kenyan rocks and soils and even ash from the Great Rift Valley, is to create a feast for the eyes. A sizeable sampling of them is currently on display covering all sorts of functional ceramic items at Alliance Francaise in the upstairs exhibition space. The show itself has the rather prosaic title ‘Kenyan Glazes – Functional Uses’, but that shouldn’t keep the public away from seeing an exceptional exhibition that illustrates the ingenuity, perseverance and patience persistence of this talented Kenyan woman. It also includes more than a dozen of the actual rocks that she was able to transform into glazes. She also has a series of columns above each dish of rock on which she’s displayed a sampling of her tests.
