Kenting tourist numbers plummet in first half of 2017

Tourism in Kenting has been hit hard by cooling cross-strait ties, officials say. The balmy beach town welcomed only 2.11 million tourists in the first half of this year, 1.32 million fewer than it had in the same period last year. Deng-Jhih Lee, vice director of Kenting National Park Administration, said tourist numbers had dropped off for the second year straight and was caused by primarily by the reduction of Chinese tourists. Not only has the number of Chinese tourists decreased, the number of domestic tourists has too, said Chang Chi-kuang, general manager of Howard Beach Resort Kenting. Chang said Taiwanese tourists' willingness to travel may have been affected by the new "one fixed, one flexible" day off policy and pension reform.
