We can’t say that there was an overwhelming support for India in Kashmir, but they had started to accept us. The end result was a predictable one: the Raj retreated within two years of the end of the Second World War. A bitter Raj grew suspicious of the Indian troops as well, especially those who were in Japanese captivity. And though the people largely supported the Raj facing a Japanese invasion, they wanted independence by all means. Tourism started to flourish again, Kashmir had democratic elections, Kashmiris started to come out of the valley to the major Indian cities to work in MNCs and government departments.
