Kapiti kayaker has close encounter with southern right whaleCAMPBELL THOMSON/ SUPPLIEDA kayaker got more than he bargained for after paddling out to check on a whale's wellbeing. Campbell Thomson, of Raumati South, spent just over an hour with the southern right whale off the Kapiti Coast on Wednesday. He had seen larger whales, and pods of orca off the coast before, but never a southern right whale. "Its fin rubbed my right shoulder. Thomson, who has paddled with whales in Niue and Tonga and paddled around New Zealand, said the encounter marked a first for him.
