KQ sacks 80 as its planned job cuts begin

The staff retrenchment was to begin in May but was opposed by the unions representing the airline's workers including the Kenya Airline Pilots Union among others. Kenya Airways has retrenched 80 employees as it starts the planned employee restructuring programme announced in March. The airline had announced its intention to sack 600 workers to cut costs, as part of the ongoing turnaround programme to improve financial performance. The airline said it expects the turnaround programme to deliver at least $200 million (Sh20 billion) in value through cost reduction and increase in revenue streams. Four years ago, KQ retrenched 400 employees in a similar exercise aimed at cutting costs.
