John Bercow could stand down as Commons Speaker next year amid a Tory backlash and bullying allegations, it was claimed today. MPs close to Mr Bercow believe he could opt to quit rather than cling on to the crucial role until the next election in 2022. Mr Bercow has been facing increasing pressure to resign after a series of controversies and allegations about bullying of staff - which he denies. Mr Bercow appeared to indicate last week that he wanted to stay until 2022. Mr Bercow and his family live rent-free in an opulent apartment at parliament, where the taxpayer foots a £109 a month bill for the Arsenal fan's Sky subscription.
