At a time when most schoolboys are enjoying the summer holidays, perhaps sunning themselves on a beach, 11-year-old Jack Lander decided to do something a bit different: walk 160 miles for charity in just eight days. As a racing fan, he wanted to raise money for The Injured Jockeys Fund and Racing Welfare. The starting point was the headquarters of racing in Newmarket, the finishing post the Jack Berry rehabilitation centre at Malton in Yorkshire. In between, a twisting, turning route, up hill and down dale along A and B roads. Jack’s father, Darren, wondered if his son was taking on too much, but he knew that when Jack gets an idea in his head it takes some shifting.
