Jimmy Lai cleared of intimidating reporter


Next Media founder Jimmy Lai Chee-ying has been acquitted at West Kowloon Magistrates' Court today of charges he initimidated a local journalist. Lai, 72, had pleaded not guilty to a charge of criminal intimidation of the reporter -- identified only as "X" -- when he appeared before West Kowloon Magistrate May Chung Ming-sun. Lai was accused of intimidating an Oriental Daily reporter during the June 4 candlelight vigil three years ago at Victoria Park. The reporter was assigned by Oriental Daily to follow Lai for about four years as part of a "special core group" trackng the media tycoon since 2013. He told police under caution when he told X that he would find "someone to give you trouble," he meant he would apply for an injunction to prohibit X from harassing him and seek the help of police and lawyers.
