Surgeons at Rampurhat district hospital in Birbhum took out over 1.6kg of ornaments, 60 coins and a wristwatch from the stomach of a 21-year-old mentally unstable woman on Wednesday afternoon. Ayurneha Khatun, a resident of Margram’s Anantapur village, had been brought to the hospital 10 days ago with severe pain in her abdomen. X-rays and scans revealed a large deposit of metals in her stomach. Doctors said Ayurneha seemed to be suffering from “delusional disorder”, which made her think the ornaments were edible. Her brother owns a jewellery shop, from where she is suspected to have taken the ornaments.
