Former provincial cabinet minister Helena Jaczek will be going to Ottawa as the new Liberal MP for Markham-Stoufville. Jaczek beat Conservative Theodore Antony by more than 5,000 votes with more than 90 per cent of polls reporting in Monday's federal election. Jaczek, a former provincial Liberal cabinet minister in Kathleen Wynne’s government, entered the race in late August after she was convinced by supporters that the riding wanted a strong Liberal candidate to challenge Philpott. During the campaign, many worried Jaczek and Philpott would split the progressive vote and ensure a Conservative victory.
