On Friday, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a three-year China deal that will relax tariffs on canola, peas and seafood in exchange for allowing the import of 49,000 Chinese-made electric vehicles per year. Before announcing it, Carney said that this new friendship “sets us up well for the new world order.”Which has me wondering: What’s the plan if China invades Taiwan? Are we going to keep the trade going while issuing a multitude of empty statements condemning the conflict in the South China Sea? In 2023, President Xi Jinping had instructed the army to be ready by 2027 for a Taiwan invasion, according to U.S. intelligence at the time. Carney seemed to be aware of the risks a year ago when he identified China as our biggest security threat.
