PUTRAJAYA: The 20 Automated Awareness Safety System (Awas) cameras in place nationwide have captured 251,193 images of traffic offences since April. Road Transport Department (JPJ) director-general Datuk Shaharuddin Khalid said the offences were speeding and running red lights. Awas is an integration of the Automated Enforcement System (AES) cameras and Demerit Points Sytem (Kejara) implemented on April 1. "JPJ is not into collecting fines for the sake of revenue, but to educate motorists to adhere to traffic laws. "If there were 100 Awas cameras, this number would have increased threefold and this is not good for the nation," Shaharuddin told reporters at a press conference at the JPJ head office here on Tuesday.
