Tapu Te Ranga Marae, in Island Bay, Wellington, is on fire. A live-in marae in Island Bay, Wellington - Tapu Te Ranga Marae - has been razed to the ground overnight. Fire truck hoses are snaked around the roads of Island Bay, as firefighters pump water up to the marae from as far as Island Bay Parade. "It won't be a peaceful sleep for us or the residents of Island Bay tonight," she said. It was founded by Bruce Stewart QSM, who named it after Island Bay's Tapu Te Ranga Island, which means the "sacred rising".
