Oddly, though, they find themselves utterly unable to articulate why the book is so great. Such is the case with “Dead Astronauts,” the new novel by Florida writer Jeff VanderMeer. Set in the ecological-dystopian world of VanderMeer’s “Borne,” the novel is neither a prequel nor a sequel to that novel. “Dead Astronauts” contains all of these lines of narrative, and more, but even that close to bursting at the seams, it is greater than the sum of its parts. Ultimately, “Dead Astronauts” is sui generis, a book you simply must read.
