Charlie Lyne is very funny. I laughed so hard watching Charlie Lyne’s new film, Fish Story, that I had difficulty breathing. The merits of Paint Drying as a motion picture I will leave to history. Neither film is funny, exactly – the excerpt-heavy essay-film approach doesn’t lend itself to witticisms. And it proves emphatically that he retains a gift a great many more documentarians could stand to learn: how to make someone laugh.
