Toronto stock market off to a strong start in broad-based gain


The Toronto Stock Exchange’s S&P/TSX composite index was up 113.15 points to 15,619.62, after 45 minutes of trading. Canada’s main stock index is off to a strong start this morning, offsetting a lot of Thursday’s triple-digit loss. The S&P 500 index shed 1.29 points to 2,387.48, and the Nasdaq composite index was up 4.46 points at 6,053.39. The Canadian dollar was trading at 73.18 cents U.S., down 0.22 of a cent from Thursday’s close. The June gold contract was up $1.40 cents at $1,267.30 an ounce and the July copper contract was up two cents at $2.61 a pound.
