Other dating apps are warning their users that it “isn’t a good time to be swapping spit”, as Open messaged its 50,000 users last week. Meanwhile, gay dating app Grindr has responded to the lockdown by making some of its premium features free, such as being able to see up to 300 local profiles without charge. Other than video calls, messaging is the most popular way of communicating on dating apps during the Covid-19 lockdown, according to the Bumble Ireland survey. Voice calls are next at 16pc, with video calls the preference for 12pc. Sending voice notes is also somewhat popular, with 11pc of Bumble users doing it as part of their dating process.
