MTV has shut many of its music channels around the world, with five stations — MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live — going dark. The station first started broadcasting music videos back in 1981, and it would be difficult to overstate its cultural impact. Instead of simply recording songs, they had to create visual accompaniments — videos — which could be shown on MTV.
