Southland Girls’ High School student Sophie Ineson, 12, is encouraging more girls to get involved in science, starting with her own schoolmates, thanks to help from the US Embassy. The Southland Girls’ High School student was featured on national television in 2020, when she was featured on Fair Go's Consumer Heroes special which invites children to come up with problems and ideas to fix them. Chargé d'Affaires Kevin Covert said staff were impressed with Sophie's passion about space and her commitment to learning more about it. “These returning interns are young Kiwi women who have sat in classrooms just like the ones at Southland Girls, they’ve studied the same curriculum. They love space, and they know the highs and the challenges of pursuing a career in this area,” Covert said.
