Injury crash numbers stable in Mackenzie despite drop in tourism

(File photo)The number of motor vehicle crashes causing injury has remained constant in the Mackenzie region of the South Island in 2020, despite tourism to the region dropping significantly due to Covid-19. Between January 1 and November 16, 2020 there have been two fatal, four serious injury, and 19 minor injury crashes, compared to three fatal, five serious injury, and 24 minor injury crashes in 2019. Since June 1, 2020, after the national lockdowns were lifted, there have been one fatal and five minor injury crashes in the Mackenzie. Male drivers were either primarily or partly at fault in 74 per cent of injury crashes.
