For historical reasons, British banks dominated the financial scene in the Gulf in that era. The BBME's executives were among the first to respond to the patriotic call from the "Iron Lady" and they bought Jaguars and Land Rovers, giving up their American, Swedish or German cars. Today, the UAE is the fourth largest market in the world for Jaguars and Land Rovers. The Tata name is now inseparably associated with Jaguars and Land Rovers. Would Thatcher have called for buying Jaguars and Land Rovers today?
