Although India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are now much wealthier, their masses still live in poverty, working in precarious jobs, in the midst of rampant inequality. The average Bangladeshi lives longer than the average IndianIndia’s superior economic performance, however, hasn’t led to higher average life expectancy. Chart 2 shows Bangladesh has a higher average life expectancy than India, in spite of being much poorer. As the chart shows, the Gini coefficient of disposable income, a measure of inequality, is much higher for India than for Pakistan or Bangladesh.
