The large shift toward utility-scale renewable energy has fast-tracked the evolution of solar technology and pushed the demand for clean energy projects by independent power producers. Among calls to ramp up Paris Agreement commitments and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, African countries have turned to independent power producers (IPPs) to fast-track the implementation of renewable energy projects and contribute to a low-emissions future while striving for future energy security. During a discussion at the Future Energy and Solar Show Africa 2023, panellists gathered to draw lessons from successful independent power projects in sub-Saharan Africa. This is while utility-scale projects are funded traditionally due to their bankability and rural projects are funded through venture capital. “This is an opportunity for South Africa to learn quite a lot and be dynamic,” Mbijeka said.
