Shelley Adler, 5 Women: For 30 years or so, Shelley Adler has largely done one thing, though she does it entirely in her own way and supremely well. A master portraitist, using expressive gesture and bold colour to create a representation as much of her subjects’ souls as their appearances, Adler expands the frame and confrontationally so. Where old work would see faces caught in a glance or nearly obscured, 5 Women stares you in the face, daring you to hold their gazes and look back.
