Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal at the unveiling of a bronze statue of Ahom general Bir Lachit Borphukan in front of Dao stadium inside Dinjan military base in Dibrugarh district on Monday. Sonowal applauded the army's effort to recognise the contribution of the great warrior, whose valour thwarted the Mughals' attempt to capture Assam in the 1671 Battle of Saraighat. It's the first such monument installed in a military base in the Northeast. The general officer commanding of Spear Corps Lt Gen. Anil Chauhan, thanked the Assam government for funding the project and said, 'Bir Lachit Borphukan is of the stature of Rana Pratap, Shivaji, Lakshmi Bai and Baji Rao. However, not many are aware of his contribution in keeping Assam away from the clutches of the Mughals.'
