An only child, Mr. Gottlieb graduated from Columbia in 1952 and then spent two years doing graduate work at Cambridge University in England. “The act of publishing is essentially the act of making public one’s own enthusiasm,” Mr. Gottlieb writes. Katharine Hepburn, during the writing of hers, liked to receive visitors — including Mr. Gottlieb — in her bed. Mr. Gottlieb corresponded with Mr. Toole for two years before declining the novel. As Mr. Gottlieb drove past, he shouted out the car window, “Where’s my manuscript?”
