The former New York home of Christie’s Auction House is, ironically, now the home of a new immersive theater experience, “Beneath the Gavel” http://www.59e59.org/moreinfo.php?showid=271, on the global auction scene. Playgoers are invited to preregister to participate in the play’s three auctions when they purchase their tickets; if they do so, they are considered VIP’s at the auction. Performances of the play, which are taking place through April 9, are at 59E59, a theater located on East 59th Street between Madison and Park Avenues in Manhattan. Until the late 1990’s, Christie’s was located right around the corner, at 502 Park Avenue; two of 59E59’s three theaters were once part of Christie’s galleries, including the one where “Beneath the Gavel” is performed. Why does the artist not see the financial benefit as a work increases in value?
