IGNOU aims to create virtual library


more-inThe Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has started imparting training to build a large force of library professionals to create a National Virtual Library of India. IGNOU Vice-Chancellor Ravindra Kumar on Tuesday inaugurated a five-day training workshop, organised jointly by the university, the Ministry of Culture and Kolkata-based Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation. Open source platformThe National Virtual Library project, a joint initiative under the Ministry’s National Mission on Libraries, seeks to create a catalogue of libraries across India which, apart from books, will include artefacts and other resources from libraries, museums, archives, etc., using an open source platform Koha. Mr. Kumar emphasised the need for capacity building of library professionals due to adoption of information communication technology applications in all walks of life. Uma Kanjilal of IGNOU said the major tasks ahead for the university were collection of bibliographic records of major libraries in India, avoiding record duplication and transliteration interface in Koha.
