John Downey was charged with killing the four Royal Household Cavalrymen but his case at the Old Bailey collapsed in 2014 when the 66-year-old Co Donegal resident produced a British government letter, sent in error, that said he would not be prosecuted. Relatives seeking to sue Mr Downey were denied legal aid five times before the Legal Aid Agency (LAA) confirmed that money would be awarded.
