How to talk about mental wellbeing in the workplace

OPINION: While the events of Covid-19 have seen us more regularly check in on our colleagues, friends and family, not to mention take stock of our own levels of mental wellbeing, discussion and action around mental wellbeing in the workplace still has a long way to go. Insights from our MYOB 2021 Business Monitor revealed that while more than a third of small business owners have experienced a mental health condition since starting or taking over their business, just 28 per cent of New Zealand SMEs surveyed had discussed mental wellbeing in their workplace in the 12 months prior to our monitor. Listen, follow up and check in, and if required have some useful contact numbers handy to refer them on to, such as 1737 or a place for them to proactively manage mental wellbeing, such as the Smiling Mind app. A little chat really can go a long way, so reach out, check in and get talking.
